During our Members’ Review Webinar last Saturday, we talked about updating or revamping older oil paintings. The subject was on the top of my mind due to the fact that I’ve been revisiting old paints lately. While listening to the Realism Live Convention I heard Daniel Sprick say “there’s no expiry date on revamping oil paints– in some cases years later on.”

I concur! The paint Sunday Drive was completed in 2014 and delivered off to the Broadmoor Gallery where it sat for a couple of years. Getting the paint back was bittersweet. It’s always wonderful to sell a piece, but I enjoyed for the opportunity to service it once again.

Even though it had some weak locations, it was a painting I personally enjoyed. So, I was excited to see what more I could do with structure (there’s a wonderful post about texture below) as well as shade while hopefully not shedding the significance of what I enjoyed about the painting.
What I enjoyed in the image were the turned, contrasting trees, the structures, and the feeling of driving or walking through a tree-lined road. What I really did not like was the dull sidewalk color taking up a lot space in the structure. So, I changed the composition and concentrated on those things I found intriguing.
What I enjoyed in the painting were the vegetation and also tree trunk structures and contrasts.

What I really did not repaint well was the road– it really did not seem like it harmonized whatever around it and also the lines were also noticeable. I likewise felt I might press darkness and light in the mass of foliage much more successfully. There was too much similarity from left to appropriate and leading to bottom via the middle of the paint.

The trees on the right have been incorporated right into the rest of the paint with more vegetation. The big tree on the right near the road was separated right into 2 distinct trees, with one being pushed to the other side of the road. I did that with the concept that it would certainly assist move the customer right into and also with the paint.

The field behind-the-scenes was changed with light ochres and lavenders to control the color so it would certainly pull the visitor into the painting while not popping forward or distracting from the locations around it. I added a great deal of shades right into the road from the bordering plants to aid the roadway seem like it belonged.
